27th of this Month, specifically 27th January 2018, Alhaji Yahaya Bello will be exactly two years as the Governor of Kogi State. The way and manner Gov. Yahaya Bello became the number one citizen of the confluence state is divine. There is no doubting the fact that the Almighty Allah, the Especially Merciful enthroned Yahaya Bello as the youngest governor of his time on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC.
Although Yahaya Bello had expression of interest to become the 4th Executive Governor of his State by participating in his party primary election conducted on 29th August 2015. He emerged 2nd position after the late Prince Abubakar Audu of blessed Memory.
To some discerning mind, the final endorsement of Yahaya Bello as Executive Governor by Allah was an answer to the prayers of his people who felt grossly neglected and marginalised for almost twenty years in the state. Though we do not want to share in this sentiment. All we know is that Allah who honours whoever He likes gave Yahaya Bello the opportunity to become governor of his State so that he can do what is right to the entire people of the State.
In Lagos and Kano states, we have had progressive leaders epitomised by the late Lateef Jakande, Bola Tinubu, Babatunde Fashola and now Akinwunmi Ambode from Lagos. In Kano, we also have the likes of the late Abubakar Rimi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Ibrahim Shekarau and now Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. These past and Present Governors have wonderfully contributed to the progress and development of their states in their tenures.
Unfortunately, Kogi has not been so much lucky since her creation on 27th August 1991. Almost all the governors that have so far administered the state have been criticised by the people of the State. The late Prince Abubakar Audu, the first executive governor of Kogi State had some billion of Naira question against him before he gave up the ghost. It is not long ago when the former two governors, Ibrahim Idris popularly called Ibro and Wada Idris accused each other of how billions of naira exchanged hands during their tenures. Even the present governor has not been spared of horrendous criticism by his people.
Kogi State has been left to dance naked since its creation. Whether such negative trait is a curse or ‘blessing’, something must be done to correct the anomalies now and quickly too.
Incidentally unlike others, the present government led by Yahaya Bello is in the position to right the wrong because he is the one in charge of the State today. So far, he has spent two solid years. There is no doubt that he has achieved. But his people are still crying on daily basis especially about the nonpayment of salaries of which series of explanation from his government have deferred reasoning and common sense.
When you give your child food to eat and after eating he still cries, check him because there are some parts of his body that the food has not touched. Therefore, the child cannot be shouted down not to ask for more.
The people of Kogi must not be shouted down because they deserve better deal than the unfortunate situation they have been unnecessarily subjected to.
As Governor Yahaya Bello clocks two years in office, he must not allow things to continue as they are. He must strategize to ensure that there is new thing in his new direction. He should look front, back and side ways to determine who among his aides really mean well for him. Those that are clearly seen as cogs in the wheel of progress must not be allowed to go with the next two years of the first term of the new direction if Allah so desires.
The governor should lay emphasis on stomach infrastructure by paying all the outstanding salaries and pensions to all the deserving workers of the State, so as to start on a very clean slate. We can’t think of good roads, housing and even health care if people’s earnings are relegated to the background.
We have on many occasions spoken on this matter and we are speaking about it again. This indicates how concerned we are about the issue. As governor Yahaya Bello clocks two years in office, we wish him Allah’s guard, guidance and protection, Amin.
